Snow Day Deadlines

Two deadlines are fast approaching:

1) We still need a city. Heeeeeellpp!! Can some of you use some of our time off to finish a city? I will burn it and mail it off if you send me one that qualifies. We really need to get it in the mail by Friday. We will lose even more points if we turn it in after that.

2) Written work: The essay needs to be gone by the first Tuesday after break. Can we get it done by the end of this week so that we don't have it hanging over us during the holiday break. We also need to create an abstract, that is dependent upon which city is completed.

I have created this blog today so that we will have a forum to share. Use the response system to thread a conversation. After you create your response, the only thing you will need is to copy the password when you submit. It changes every time.

60 comments:

  1. My e-mail is kentward896@comcast.net if you have any work you want to submit. Otherwise, do your chatting through the comments.

  2. How do I keep my city from losing all of it's money? And setting spontaneously on fire?

P.S. You can change the comment settings so that people can post as "anonymous". That way you can comment without a Blogspot account. Just FYI.

  3. OK, updated the comments settings.

As far as $ go, you have to be careful not to spend more than you take in. Also you should be able to turn off the disasters of which fire is one.

  4. Of course, when you start up, you have to spend more than you take in. One way to attract high tech industry is to tax them less, then up the taxes when they move in. You could also tax dirty industry more, as long as you don't drive them away.

  8. Chris. What is the scale you have been using?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Chris B
I am usin the 30ft/in scale.
    Am i doing anything wrong?
    Chris

    ReplyDelete
  10. I just didn't know what the scale was.
I was out of the room when Maan explained the scale.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sorry I was out for a while today. We switched to a 30ft/in scale so there would be more room.
Kent, if you have Maan's e-mail, maybe he could join the blog and help with these questions.

  12. Teal Fielding -
Okay, for our essays, I am doing the beginning and conclusion paragraphs, but am I doing it on my city?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I do not have Maan's email--bummer!

Teal, the beginning and end are for the house essay. I know that the city affects how you introduce, but we are still waiting to see which city can be completed. Sorry I don't have a better answer.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Teal Fielding -
Okay, we'll try to get back to me.

    ReplyDelete
  15. We need to get the abstract started also. Is anyone getting anywhere with the city? If so, we should pick that city and go with it for the abstract and essay. Any volunteers for drafting the abstract?

One more thing - futurecity.org has a blog also. It has many suggestions for working on the city.

    Mrs. Remmen

  16. Hi everyone, What are we doing for our moving part? Also who is keeping track of our money?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Are you doing very detailed models?(such as showing the lines in the parking lots and windows....)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Do we have to include the water indipendent house in our model?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have the sheet to keep track of money if people tell me what they are using.

    did we change scales

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is Jenny Ashley. I am on the Portcouver team and am responsible for keeping track of the money spent. So far, I've gotten no information. Would the people on the Portcouver team please submit their expenses to me?

    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jenny I thought we were going to use whichever city was finished first so aren't we a combined team?

    Celine Guess

    ReplyDelete
  23. This is Celine Guess just so everyone knows the scale is 25 ft. = 1 in.

  24. This is Mr. G. I have been running errands all day, but I have great news for the writers. I went to school today and emailed myself all the written documents you posted on the server. I also brought home the teacher book which has a copy of Kolina's paragraph in hard copy form. I also have an email with Jenny's submission. Can we set a meet up here at the blog either Monday or Tuesday at 10:00 AM? I will email all the documents to those who are interested. Thanks for all your hard work the last couple of days.

  25. hi this is corinne.
so i was wondering, do we decorate the grid paper or not? if so what do we use... construction paper?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I thought we were painting the board. The grid paper is to help with layout.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Here is Maan's email address for scale and modeling questions.

    ReplyDelete
  28. From Maan:

I bought three miniature fans with miniature motors and switches and I was going to bring them to school today.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This is Mrs. Remmen. I don't think the moving part has been decided. If someone wants to work on a moving part (someone mentioned a turning sign), I think anyone could come up with something. There isn't anything that says we can't have more than one moving part if we happen to get two.

The idea was to decorate the board. The paper is to help you with your section layout. Remember to keep the roads that were in your area so everything goes together when we get back.

Do we have someone working on the abstract yet? Can we get one for each city possibly?

If anyone spent money or has items we need to track the cost please post here so Jenny and Kolina can track those.

    ReplyDelete
  30. To answer a few more questions:
We don't have to include the water independent house in the model. It may be expected by the judges though, and it would give the presenters a chance to talk about it.

We did change the scale to 1"=30'.

For details, I don't think you need to include parking lot lines, windows would be optional.

Since we have fans and motors coming, someone could design a physical part to move with air and connect the motor/fan later.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This is Jenny Ashley. Since we are still working on two cities, Kolina and I are keeping track of expenses for our individual teams. Once we choose which city will compete, we will work together.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Mrs. Remmen:
That sounds good Jenny. It wouldn't hurt to have two people tracking this as a check anyway.

  33. hi this is cameron. i was thinking if you have a motoer we could ether make a sky tram or an elevater. do we have to a yard around the homes that is? and beside the fact the nothing can go above 20in is there a width restriction?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Cameron-I believe that your width restriction should be consistent with the width of actual houses or buildings. I also think you will be limited by your part of the grid.

    ReplyDelete
  35. To all-I have emailed the documents that I pulled off the school server and one that Jenny emailed to me. Many a just links or lists of links. I am presently retyping a paragraph from Kolina and two from someone describing Portcouver. I should have those emailed within the next 15 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  36. this is cameron thanks mr.g but has anybody have an idea at what the moveing part is?? how about an elovetor but is a sky tram to big? do we have modle the citys after the esseya?

    ReplyDelete
  37. this is cameron
do we have to make garages that is if you are making housing that is. what is the moving part??

    ReplyDelete
  38. Still have no agreement on the moving part. The house does not have to have a garage--a future city citizen will probably have different way of getting around. Flying anyone?

    Merry Christmas Eve. Everyone ask Santa for a completed SimCity. :-}

    Mr. G

  39. cameron speaking. we cant bulid the moving part untill everone agrees on it so please ideas!!! is a a car driveing on ther road to much or a boat.

    Cole hunt

    ReplyDelete
  41. how about three or four wind mills? one could not power a city.
    cameron

    ReplyDelete
  42. A few wind mills are a great idea lt's use it!

    ReplyDelete
  43. whoops! I mean LET'S use it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Is everyone making sure that they're making their models on pieces of cardboard?!

    ReplyDelete
  45. when are we due to get the model in?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Could everyone PLEASE tell me how much money they are spending. even if it's none. Like how much were those fans?
    Thanks
    Kolina :)

  47. what is the opeing line of the speechy??

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hello Celine,
OK I think we each should write a speech and get it in by noon Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is to say post it here by noon Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Part one About one minute forty seconds
    Presentor1=? Presentor2=? Presentor3=?

(Presentor1 Steps forward) Ladies and gentelmen
we represent RiverhomeLink from Camas, WA. This is our first year competing in the Future city competion.

(Presentor2 steps forward as Presentor1 steps back) We've learned a lot about engineering and why or why not we would like to be an engineer. But most of all we've uncovered a new respect for those engineers who work hard and make difficult decisions in order to make our cities prosper.

(Presentor3 steps foward as Presentor2 steps back) I would now like to present our city, Portcouver! We've tried to keep it realistic by primarily using items that are either already available to the public, are being developed, or are being tested. There are a few selected items that are new to the world such as pollution absorbing aluminum sheets.(points to foil covered factory)

(Presentor1 steps forward as Presentor3 steps back) To produce energy in Portcouver we employ a variety of techniques such as Solar Panels, (points to Theater/Museum)Wind Mills, (points to wind mill)and Energy Producing Sidewalks. As for our water we collect the rain water through our roofs(points to low income housing)It then goes through a filtration system which first evaporates it into steam then the steam travels upward pushing a paddle producing energy the the steam turns back into water. From there the water trvels through a pipe past a UV light and to the faucets of the homeowner.

(Presentor2 steps forward as Presentor1 steps back) After the home owner has used the water it travels to a city plant where any sewage is strained out, made into compost, and sold at the S-mart and at Bill's.(points to S-mart and Bill's)After the sewage has been strained out it goes through the same treatment as the water for the houses go through. When the treatment is finaly finished it is pumped to the garden hoses of the city so that it can be safley put back into the earth.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sorry about it being two parts but I needed a break. Also which Presentors do you guys want to be Presentor1,2,or3?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just noticed somthing at the end of part one.
What I meant to say was: After the sewage has been strained out of the water, the water goes throughthe same treatment ect.

    ReplyDelete
  53. This is as much of the speech that I have time to write so you guys will either have to finish it or write a new one.

Presentor3 steps forward as presentor2 steps back) Our city was purposely designed to seperate the industrial/commercial areas from the residensial areas. Even though it is not shown on the model the river seperates the city. The reason it is not shown on the model is that to bring it up to scale it would be so large that we would only have a tiny portion of the model that we have here today.

(Presentor1 steps forward as Presentor3 steps back)The technoligies we use in Portcover for transportation are cars of course, trains, monorails, and ferries. We use the ferries most of all because peopole usually have to use it daily to get to work. We tax the ferries most of all and this provdes a large income for the city.

This is all I had time for.

  54. Celine,

What great work. Chris should be getting on anytime now. Cameron is gone to Seattle already and I don't have their cell phone #.

To help you with your presentation, use the city as a visual aid--this building is great because... or this house represents our water independent house...

Thanks again for your dedication. I will see you in the morning.

    Mr. G

  55. Are we supposed to print the outline of the speach or not?
