Two deadlines are fast approaching:
1) We still need a city. Heeeeeellpp!! Can some of you use some of our time off to finish a city? I will burn it and mail it off if you send me one that qualifies. We really need to get it in the mail by Friday. We will lose even more points if we turn it in after that.
2) Written work: The essay needs to be gone by the first Tuesday after break. Can we get it done by the end of this week so that we don't have it hanging over us during the holiday break. We also need to create an abstract, that is dependent upon which city is completed.
I have created this blog today so that we will have a forum to share. Use the response system to thread a conversation. After you create your response, the only thing you will need is to copy the password when you submit. It changes every time.

ReplyDeleteAs far as $ go, you have to be careful not to spend more than you take in. Also you should be able to turn off the disasters of which fire is one.
Of course, when you start up, you have to spend more than you take in. One way to attract high tech industry is to tax them less, then up the taxes when they move in. You could also tax dirty industry more, as long as you don't drive them away.

ReplyDeleteOn the grid paper how many square ft equal one square? pur government paper is 10 by 5 so about how many buildings could fit on there? one more thing, how many inches is one floor? we know that the highest is 20 inches.

ReplyDeleteI've got most of my part of the mnodel of the city done:) I'm still working on the parking lot and some fencing. I only have to indutrial buildings but they are big. I wrapped the in foil and i am holding the styrofoam together with toothe picks that igot from the Dollar Tree. But I don' have the recipt:( I am also using glue to hold the toothpicks togethe. Do we have to put money down for that?
I was wondering what part of the esay I was supossed do. If you could email my mom that would be great:)

This is Mrs. Remmen. I don't think the moving part has been decided. If someone wants to work on a moving part (someone mentioned a turning sign), I think anyone could come up with something. There isn't anything that says we can't have more than one moving part if we happen to get two.
ReplyDeleteThe idea was to decorate the board. The paper is to help you with your section layout. Remember to keep the roads that were in your area so everything goes together when we get back.
Do we have someone working on the abstract yet? Can we get one for each city possibly?

To answer a few more questions:
ReplyDeleteWe don't have to include the water independent house in the model. It may be expected by the judges though, and it would give the presenters a chance to talk about it.
We did change the scale to 1"=30'.
For details, I don't think you need to include parking lot lines, windows would be optional.
Since we have fans and motors coming, someone could design a physical part to move with air and connect the motor/fan later.
This is Jenny Ashley. Since we are still working on two cities, Kolina and I are keeping track of expenses for our individual teams. Once we choose which city will compete, we will work together.

hi this is cameron. i was thinking if you have a motoer we could ether make a sky tram or an elevater. do we have to a yard around the homes that is? and beside the fact the nothing can go above 20in is there a width restriction?
ReplyDeleteCameron-I believe that your width restriction should be consistent with the width of actual houses or buildings. I also think you will be limited by your part of the grid.

we represent RiverhomeLink from Camas, WA. This is our first year competing in the Future city competion.
(Presentor2 steps forward as Presentor1 steps back) We've learned a lot about engineering and why or why not we would like to be an engineer. But most of all we've uncovered a new respect for those engineers who work hard and make difficult decisions in order to make our cities prosper.
(Presentor3 steps foward as Presentor2 steps back) I would now like to present our city, Portcouver! We've tried to keep it realistic by primarily using items that are either already available to the public, are being developed, or are being tested. There are a few selected items that are new to the world such as pollution absorbing aluminum sheets.(points to foil covered factory)
(Presentor1 steps forward as Presentor3 steps back) To produce energy in Portcouver we employ a variety of techniques such as Solar Panels, (points to Theater/Museum)Wind Mills, (points to wind mill)and Energy Producing Sidewalks. As for our water we collect the rain water through our roofs(points to low income housing)It then goes through a filtration system which first evaporates it into steam then the steam travels upward pushing a paddle producing energy the the steam turns back into water. From there the water trvels through a pipe past a UV light and to the faucets of the homeowner.
(Presentor2 steps forward as Presentor1 steps back) After the home owner has used the water it travels to a city plant where any sewage is strained out,made into compost,and sold at the S-mart and at Bill's.(points to S-mart and Bill's)After the sewage has been strained out it goes through the same treatment as the water for the houses go through. When the treatment is finaly finished it is pumped to the garden hoses of the city so that it can be safley put back into the earth.

Even though it is not shown on the model the river seperates the city. The reason it is not shown on the model is that to bring it up to scale it would be so large that we would only have a tiny portion of the model that we have here today.
(Presentor1 steps forward as Presentor3 steps back)The technoligies we use in Portcover for transportation are cars of course, trains, monorails, and ferries. We use the ferries most of all because peopole usually have to use it daily to get to work. We tax the ferries most of all and this provdes a large income for the city.
